Blue Star 1 loading up at port in Piraeus

It felt a long time to get to our first destination in Greece. Saturday we drove into Victoria to stay the night in the condo, which is nearer the airport. Sunday morning we Uber-ed to the airport. Mid-day Sunday we were on a 4.5 hour flight to Toronto, our carry-ons competing for space with our feet on the cramped Rouge flight. Sunday evening we were on a 9.5 hour Air Canada flight to Athens. Lots of legroom, terrible food. Mid-day Monday we were in Athens on a long metro ride (26 stops) to Piraeus. After a night at a Piraeus hotel we caught an early-morning Blue Star ferry for an 8h ride to our first stop, Santorini, a small island just north of Crete. And with that, finally, we had arrived.

Santorini

The photo was taken from the Blue Star 1 as it sailed into the sea-filled caldera of an ancient volcano. We are looking at the island of Thera, aka Thira, better known as Santorini, the largest island of a small, circular archipelago formed by the Santorini caldera. The volcanic explosion occurred about 3,600 years ago. If you look closely you can see the towns of Oia and Fira, which are the white buildings that from a distance look like snow.
