In 1859, a railroad track for freight trains was constructed, some of it via a viaduct, connecting the station at Place de la Bastille to the station in Saint-Maur, 14 km southeast of Paris. In 1969 the rail line was discontinued. It was abandoned for years and became an eyesore.
In 1998 Paris turned the abandoned railway viaduct into an elevated park, called La Promenade Plantée (aka La Coulée Verte), and the space underneath was turned into a series of art galleries, workshops, and studios, called Le Viaduc des Arts. The project has since inspired other cities to repurpose their abandoned tracks.

And as you walk along the viaduct at street level, you can see into the artists studios as they work metal and glass and do other artistic things. It being a sunny day, the glass reflections didn't afford any satisfying photos.
After the Aqueduct we went in search of lunch.
