The French sculptor Emile-Antoine Bourdelle lived from 1861-1929. He was a contemporary of, and influenced by, Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) and Henri Matisse (1869-1954). His studio became the Musée Bourdelle, an art museum dedicated to his work. It's in the 15th, a short walk from our apartment, tucked away at 18 rue Antoine Bourdelle, and partially hidden by construction scaffolding. The exhibit space alternates between attractive and neglected. There are museum guards in abundance—why so many, I wondered; most of the pieces are huge, not something one could hide under a coat, even my long wool coat I was glad to be wearing. Nevertheless, I found the exhibit quite grand. Big bronze sculptures and reliefs in the garden, plaster versions inside. In this first relief, the small square to the right is the text accompanying the piece, which hints at its size.
